The East of Ireland Open was hosted over Valentine’s Day weekend at the UCD Sports Centre. The national fencing competition saw fencers from across the island of Ireland compete in individual women’s and men’s foil, sabre and epee.
Past and present UCD fencers excelled, with current students Kate Coleman-Lenehan and John Wright placing first in women’s and men’s epee, while UCD fencing alumni Joana Ramalho and Stephen Concannon placed first in women’s foil and men’s sabre, respectively. Rounding out UCD’s successful run was Matthew Tracey, who earned a third place finish in men’s epee.
Kate Coleman-Lenehan and John Wright added on to already successful 2014-2015 seasons with their victories over the weekend. Coleman-Lenehan also earned a first place finish at the West of Ireland Open in October. This is Wright’s third first place finish of the season, following his success in the Irish Open in late November and Winter Blade in December.
They and the rest of the UCD fencing team will try to keep the momentum going heading into the Intervarsity competition in April, which will pit teams from Ireland’s top universities against each other.
