Album: Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards

Artist: We Cut Corners

Grade: B

Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards is the debut album from the Dublin-based band We Cut Corners and it is a welcome addition to the Irish alternative music scene. Sonically the duo are nestled somewhere amongst various bands, including The Clash, LCD Soundsystem and The Shins.

The songwriting duties are evenly shared between both members and this diversity comes across in the album. Quick changes in tempo and time signature are ubiquitous. Comparisons with The White Stripes are there to be made, but that would be doing this band a disservice. They manage to achieve a complete sound that wouldn’t be described as minimalist. The frantic and atmospheric ‘Toll Free’ is tempered by the sweet, melancholic ‘Dumb Blonde’. While this is perhaps not yet the full article, it certainly is promising for Irish music.

In a Nutshell: A promising introduction.
