From the opening credits, the viewer becomes immersed in the dark and satirical world of the antihero protagonist Deadpool. Directed by Tim Miller and starring Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool is a film which has successfully caught the attention of both Marvel fanatics and new comers to the franchise.

Deadpool is told through a very non-linear structure. In the opening sequence the audience is introduced to the Deadpool of the present: a skilled and satirically-minded red suited mercenary. After this introduction the film moves on to reveal the character’s backstory, which includes a terminal illness to overcome and a fiancé whose life he doesn’t wish to ruin. It is this tragic situation which leads Deadpool to become the lonely and mutated superhero which we follow as he seeks out revenge on those who have wronged him.

What is perhaps most interesting and what really makes this film work is the continual breaking of the fourth wall, a trope which has been adopted from the Deadpool comics. From the opening credits, which indicate that the feature will include a set stock characters such as “The Hot Chick” and “A Gratuitous Cameo,” we learn that this is going to be a film that doesn’t take itself very seriously. The humour in the film continually strives on this premise, it is steeped with clever and well timed pop culture and cinematic references throughout.

With a character such as Deadpool, 20th Century Fox is creating an antihero who in a certain way an audience can relate to a little more than others. Deadpool’s new found superpowers don’t appear to necessarily improve his life, based on the interactions with those around him. Ultimately this antipathy proves to be fruitless duet to his need for the help of X-Men Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Deadpool is a film which despite its brash satirical humour demonstrates that hiding behind a mask and fearing if people will accept you for you are problems that even superheroes face.

In a Nutshell: Deadpool is a darkly hilarious and fast paced antihero movie that entertains both Marvel fans and newcomers.
