Rebecca Hart Joins the Race for UCDSU President for the Second Time Running

Earlier this evening Rebecca Hart announced on her Facebook page that she will be running for UCDSU President in the upcoming Presidential by-elections, stating “I believe I am the best person for this job. A president you can trust, a president you can rely on.”

Hart addresses the recent controversies surrounding the SU, but believes the increased levels of student engagement seen during the impeachment campaign is a positive for the union. “There is no hiding from the past few weeks where UCDSU has faced huge challenges but also saw record levels of engagement. We need to capitalise on this and I feel I am the best person to unite students and to maintain those engagement levels.”

In her announcement, Hart says she has “many ideas and initiatives for the role that can help shape our union going forward. I know how it operates and I know how much of an impact it can have when it stands united.”

Hart ran for president last March and came third behind Katie Ascough and Philip Weldon winning 20% of the vote. Her campaign was based around strengthening the UCD community, tackling accommodation issues, and campaigning on issues such as fees and the 8th amendment.

Hart believes she is the right person to lead the union for the remainder of the year. “Going forward, the union needs a strong voice and I believe that I have the necessary experience, gathered over the last few years that can contribute positively towards UCDSU but more importantly it’s members.”

So far, two candidates have announced their intentions to run for UCDSU President: Hart and Campaigns and Communications Officer and current acting President Barry Murphy.
