The Who have produced some great music...but there is not much to "romanticize" about the sorry era of the 60s. It is good to hear Mr Daltrey speak with modesty and ambivalence about the legacy of the 60s. Civil rights and equal rights for women were two positive outcomes, but these probably would have developed without the radical edge of sixties youth. MLK was not a drug-addled mud-splattered Woodstock hippie.

We reap what we sow: freedom became license, non-conformism became a sense of unjustified entitlement, extreme individualism became egoism without concern for others, "letting it all hang out" became the reality TV generation, and self-indulgence became greed unhindered by moral or ethical boundaries.

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

My first concert when I was just a little crumb grabber was The Who on the (first) farewell tour in 1982 in San Diego. Best part of the show was when daltry was dissing 'little' Johnny Cougar for talking shmack. What a punk Cougar was...

Who are the Who now? This article is great because you can hear the years in Daltrey's voice. But hopefully they will use the genius of their past artistry to express the experiences and the perspective they share now with about 76 million americans. Perhaps then we can get over the Idolatry American Style hype. As deep as they went with "Tommy" they should go that deep now. It is a sad commentary that the article's author says, "However, in our generation of non-descript identity, and, for better or for worse, little rebellious aspirations, music can be observed to lack relevance as a true vehicle of motivation" and doesn't realize that he is talking about the current generation of marketing-susceptible young folks. The generation of Who-manics are grappling with major transitions and awakenings with much fertile ground for good songwriting.

Hopefully they will avoid the ticket maelstrom that has become the joke of mega production/venues these days. See Me...Touch Me should be their mantra.
